Mumbai, May 12: NCP (SP) leader Fahad Ahmed criticized Udhayanidhi Stalin, the opposition leader in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, for his recent ‘anti-Sanatana’ remarks, calling them ‘childish and inappropriate.’
The former Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu sparked controversy by suggesting the need to eliminate Sanatana Dharma in the presence of newly elected Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.
Speaking to reporters, Ahmed stated, “This is a very childish statement. Making comments about any religion is completely wrong and immature on Udhayanidhi Stalin’s part.” He also labeled the remarks as ‘shameful.’
Ahmed congratulated Congress for breaking its alliance with the DMK. Congress has shifted its support to the Vijay-led TVK to help it achieve a majority in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
He emphasized that Congress is an ally of NCP-SP within the ‘India’ bloc and that such statements from the DMK have put Congress in ‘uncomfortable situations.’
“Our Constitution grants every religion the freedom to follow its customs. Moreover, the majority of the country’s population adheres to Hinduism,” he noted.
He added that anyone wanting to be a ‘social reformer’ should address issues within Hinduism through social reform. Similarly, if someone sees problems within Islam, they should also pursue social reform.
He stressed, “No religion should be criticized repeatedly in this manner.”
Ahmed reiterated that Udhayanidhi Stalin’s statement is ‘extremely childish’ and should be avoided. He remarked, “The people of Tamil Nadu are well-educated; they would not expect such comments from their opposition leader.”
In response to the issue, BJP leader Nazia Ilahi Khan stated, “The people of Tamil Nadu have given their mandate to Vijay, responding to the DMK. If they still do not understand this, it may only become clear after their complete downfall.”
She further added that while political battles and rivalries are acceptable, “fighting against Lord Ram is not. Both Lord Ram and his devotees will not accept this. Fight against the political party, not against Sanatana.”
