Mysterious Death of Elderly Woman in Asansol Leads to Police Custody of Son and Daughter-in-Law

Asansol, August 20: A suspicious death of an elderly woman occurred in Asansol, West Bengal, on Wednesday. The police have taken her younger son and daughter-in-law into custody for questioning amid suspicions of murder.

The incident took place in the Kalipahari area of the Asansol South police station jurisdiction. The deceased has been identified as 56-year-old Baishakhi Hembram. Authorities have sent her body for post-mortem at the Asansol District Hospital.

Police have detained the woman’s younger son, Rajib Hembram, and his wife, Shivani, for interrogation.

The deceased’s other son, Jayant Barman, stated that he lives not far from his mother and brother. He reported that on Wednesday morning, his sister rushed to him, claiming that their brother was beating their mother.

Jayant recounted, “When I arrived, I found my mother lying in a pool of blood. The doctors declared her dead upon arrival at the hospital.”

He further alleged that their father, who worked at Eastern Coalfields Limited, received a retirement package of 4 million rupees. According to Jayant, Rajib had been demanding this money, while their mother was unwilling to give it.

He asserted, “This is why Rajib has been causing disputes at home for a long time. He killed my mother over that money.”

Local resident Sanjay Singh mentioned that he heard about the woman’s death but was unaware of the cause. He stated, “Some family members say she fell down the stairs, while others claim it was murder. The police should investigate the matter.”

Following the incident, police from the Asansol South station and DC (Central) Dhruv Das from the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate arrived at the scene.

DC Dhruv Das confirmed that a woman has died, but the cause remains unclear. He stated, “The body has been sent for post-mortem. No complaint has been filed by the family yet. We are awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the actual cause of death. Currently, two individuals are in custody.”
