Mumbai, September 4 (Daily Kiran) : The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is taking significant steps to ensure the safety and health of participants during the upcoming Dahi Handi festival in Mumbai. On September 4, additional municipal commissioner Prajakta Verma-Lavangare announced that all injured Govindas would receive free treatment at municipal hospitals.
In preparation for the festival, the BMC has instructed major and suburban hospitals to remain alert for potential accidents. Deans and medical superintendents of hospitals within the municipal area have been directed to ensure that all necessary medical arrangements are in place.
Special medical facilities will be available at key hospitals, including Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital in Sion, KEM Hospital in Parel, and Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central. Additionally, 105 beds have been set aside across 16 hospitals in the city and suburbs, with each facility accommodating between five to ten beds for this purpose.
For those with minor injuries, the plan is to provide first aid and send them home once they are stable. However, patients with severe injuries requiring extensive treatment will have access to specialized care. Medical staff will be organized into three shifts to effectively manage any emergencies that arise.
Hospitals have been instructed to maintain an adequate stock of essential medications, injections, surgical supplies, and plaster of Paris (POP). Furthermore, medical equipment, including X-ray machines, will be kept in full working order to ensure prompt care.
The BMC emphasizes that the Dahi Handi festival is a vital aspect of Mumbai’s cultural identity, with many Govindas forming human pyramids during the celebrations. Ensuring rapid and effective medical assistance in case of accidents is the administration’s top priority. All doctors and staff at the hospitals have been urged to exercise heightened vigilance during the festivities.
According to the BMC, extensive preparations have been made to strengthen health services this year, ensuring that injured Govindas receive immediate and quality treatment when necessary.
