IMD Issues Orange Alert for Multiple States as Weather Turns Unstable

New Delhi, India — April 14, 2025: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a monsoon-like alert with warnings of heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms expected across several parts of the country in the next 24 hours. An orange alert has been declared for Jharkhand, Odisha, Assam, and Meghalaya, signaling the likelihood of severe weather conditions.

Meanwhile, Rajasthan and Telangana are on heatwave watch, highlighting the contrasting weather patterns affecting the country. While northern and northeastern regions are witnessing cooling rains and thunderstorms, the southern belt continues to endure humid and extreme heat.

Region-Wise Weather Outlook

North India: Temperature Dip After Rains

After recent showers and gusty winds, North India, including Delhi-NCR, has seen a notable dip in temperatures. The IMD forecasts clear skies today in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, and Gurugram, with no major warnings issued.

East and Central India: Rain and Thunderstorms Ahead

The IMD expects continued thunderstorm activity in eastern India, including east Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, over the next 4–5 days. Heavy rainfall and lightning could cause local flooding and travel disruptions in vulnerable zones.

Northeast India: Persistent Pre-Monsoon Activity

States like Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram are already seeing moderate to heavy pre-monsoon rains. Stormy winds and lightning are expected to accompany the rain, leading to possible waterlogging in low-lying areas.

South India: Kerala Sees Record Rainfall

Pre-monsoon rains continue to batter Kerala, which has already received 96% more rainfall than normal between March 1 and April 10. The southern peninsula overall has seen a 92% surplus in rainfall, with humid heat intensifying across the region.

West India and Gujarat: Heatwave Likely

From April 15 onward, heatwave conditions are expected to develop in parts of Northwest India and Gujarat, with maximum temperatures likely to rise by 3 to 5°C by April 18, according to IMD estimates.
