Kolkata, May 20: Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami has received significant relief as he was acquitted in a cheque bounce case. The Alipore Court cleared Shami of all charges filed by his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan.
Hasin Jahan had alleged that a cheque worth ₹1 lakh, given by Shami for household expenses, had bounced. On Wednesday, the Alipore Court delivered its verdict, exonerating Shami from all accusations.
Speaking to the media, Shami’s lawyer, Salim Rahman, stated, “Cricketer Mohammed Shami has been acquitted in this four-year-old case initiated by his wife.” The hearing took place in the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Alipore, where Shami was found not guilty.
In 2018, Hasin Jahan claimed that Shami had issued a cheque for ₹1 lakh, which bounced when deposited in the bank. Following this, she approached the court and filed a case against him. In addition to this case, she has lodged several other complaints against Shami and his family members.
After the court’s decision, Shami expressed confidence in the outcome, stating he was aware it would be in his favor, as he had done nothing wrong. He remarked, “I have paid every single rupee I owed. Whether on the field or off it, I always strive to handle every situation to the best of my ability.”
Currently, Shami is representing the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, he has been in the news frequently due to ongoing legal disputes with his estranged wife.
The legal battle over alimony and maintenance between Shami and Hasin Jahan is still ongoing. As per directives from the Calcutta High Court, Shami is currently required to pay Hasin Jahan ₹1.5 lakh monthly, along with ₹2.5 lakh for the care and upbringing of their daughter.
Later, Hasin Jahan approached the Supreme Court, arguing that this amount is insufficient for household expenses. The apex court has issued notices to both Shami and the West Bengal government. During the hearing, the court questioned whether ₹4 lakh per month was inadequate for the sustenance of a mother and daughter.
