Mohammad Kaif Critiques Shreyas Iyers Captaincy After T20 Loss to New Zealand

Former cricketer Mohammad Kaif questions Shreyas Iyers captaincy decisions following Indias T20 defeat in Auckland.

New Delhi, October 31 (Daily Kiran) : In a disappointing match held at Eden Park in Auckland, India faced a setback against New Zealand in the fourth T20 encounter. Former Indian batsman Mohammad Kaif has raised concerns about the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, particularly regarding his bowling changes and strategies.

Kaif pointed out, “I have noticed some flaws in Iyer’s captaincy, especially in deciding which bowler to use at specific moments. This isn’t just about one loss; it’s a recurring pattern. Teams regularly score 200, 225, and even 250 runs against us.”

He emphasized that there is a consistent issue with Iyer’s bowling management, particularly when it comes to utilizing specialist bowlers effectively. “Iyer needs to learn how to manage his bowlers better. Arshdeep is our specialist left-arm option in death overs, while Bhuvneshwar has experience handling both the new ball and the final overs. Iyer should conserve their overs for when batsmen are looking to attack. Typically, you want to save your main bowlers for the 17th and 19th overs. This is a basic formula in T20 cricket,” Kaif explained.

Kaif highlighted a troubling statistic: prior to 2026, India had never conceded more than 250 runs in a men’s T20 match. Under Iyer’s leadership, the team has allowed three such totals in just four months. In recent matches, England scored 257 runs, West Indies reached 252, and New Zealand posted 259 runs in Auckland.

While acknowledging Iyer’s challenges, Kaif noted that the responsibility for expensive spells should not rest solely on the captain. He remarked on the struggles of Indian bowlers, specifically mentioning how Nitish Kumar Reddy conceded 64 runs in four overs, while Phillips and Bracewell combined for 115 runs off just 41 balls. Kaif pointed out that New Zealand scored 146 runs in the last nine overs, indicating that India’s bowling attack failed to control the flow of boundaries. “Arshdeep was the only Indian bowler who showed some control,” he added.

Kaif also questioned the role assigned to Nitish Kumar Reddy, suggesting, “I believe this all-rounder should be used as a fifth or sixth bowling option. His overs should come during the middle phase, not as a frontline bowler.”

Adding to the pressure on Iyer, his batting form has also been under scrutiny. After scoring an impressive 102 not out against the West Indies on October 6, Iyer has struggled in his last eight innings, managing only 40, 1, 16, 22, 42, 7, 5, and 22 runs.

Kaif’s observations reflect ongoing challenges for the Indian cricket team, as they seek to refine their strategies and improve performance ahead of future matches.
