Imphal, September 23 (Daily Kiran) : Chief Minister Yumnam Kh. Singh of Manipur congratulated weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu for winning a silver medal at the 2026 Asian Games held in Japan. He expressed that her achievement has brought immense pride to both the state and the nation.
On social media platform X, CM Singh wrote, “Heartfelt congratulations to Saikhom Mirabai Chanu for winning the silver medal in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting event at the Asian Games in Japan, lifting a total of 198 kg.”
Kh. Singh, a former taekwondo master, praised Chanu’s strength, determination, and dedication, stating that her success inspires young athletes to dream big and reach new heights. “Mirabai, we are proud of you,” he added.
The 32-year-old athlete lifted a total of 198 kg, which included 87 kg in the snatch and 111 kg in the clean and jerk. She secured second place, finishing behind North Korea’s Ri Song-gum, who lifted 210 kg. Indonesia’s Luluk Diani Tri took home the bronze medal with a total of 191 kg. This medal marks the end of Chanu’s wait to stand on the podium at the Asian Games.
Chanu, a silver medalist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, missed the 2018 Asian Games due to an injury. In the 2022 Hangzhou Games, she faced a thigh injury during the clean and jerk event, finishing in fourth place.
In another highlight from the 2026 Asian Games, India’s Naorem Roshibina Devi advanced to the finals of the women’s 60 kg wushu sanda event. She is on the brink of winning a historic gold medal, having already secured a silver medal, marking her third consecutive continental medal.
On this occasion, the Manipur Police took to social media to congratulate Roshibina, stating, “Win the gold, Roshibina. The Manipur Police wishes our Deputy Superintendent Naorem Roshibina Devi the best for the final of wushu – women’s sanda 60 kg at the 20th Asian Games 2026 in Nagoya, Japan. As the first Indian wushu player to win medals in three consecutive Asian Games, you are just one step away from gold. The entire Manipur Police family and the people of Manipur stand with you. Win the gold, champion. We are proud of you.”
