New Delhi, April 23: Union Minister of State for Panchayati Raj, S.P. Singh Baghel, will kick off the National Panchayati Raj Day (NPRD) celebrations on Friday. During the event, he will convey Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message to officials of panchayats and local bodies.
Observed annually on April 24, this day commemorates the historic 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act, which granted constitutional status and legal recognition to Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) across the nation. This year marks the 33rd anniversary of this significant achievement in India’s democratic journey.
The event will take place at Vigyan Bhawan, where a report on the Panchayat Progress Index (PAI)-2.0 will be released, along with three books under the ‘My Panchayat, My Heritage’ initiative.
The three illustrated monographs focus on rural heritage: one on Tripura’s rural heritage, another on Tirupati’s rural heritage, and the third titled ‘Uttarkashi: Saumya Kashi: The Soul of Himalayan Heritage.’
The Ministry of Panchayati Raj has planned enthusiastic celebrations of NPRD at state, district, block, and village levels across the country. Village panchayats will organize gram sabhas, reinforcing the spirit of participatory democracy at the grassroots level.
This day also serves as an opportunity to acknowledge the role of the three-tier Panchayati Raj system in accelerating progress towards a developed India.
Last year, Prime Minister Modi presided over the distribution of property cards under the Swamitva scheme (mapping and surveying villages with advanced technology) in January 2025. On that day alone, legal ownership documents were provided to 6.5 million rural citizens.
This distribution encompassed over 50,000 villages across 10 states and 2 Union Territories, bringing the total number of property cards distributed under the scheme to 22.5 million.
The ceremony will see participation from central ministers, chief ministers, governors, lieutenant governors, and representatives from 237 districts.
