Mumbai, April 16 : Mumbai Indians (MI) suffered sixth consecutive defeat of the season after losing to new entrants Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 18 runs in an Indian Premier League match here at the Brabourne Stadium on Saturday. Ridding high on skipper KL Rahul’s unbeaten 103 off 60, Lucknow posted 199/4 on the board. In reply, Mumbai were restricted to 181/9. With his century, Rahul became the first player to score a century in his 100th match in the history of the tournament and the second player to amass multiple hundreds as captain in IPL after Virat Kohli, who has five centuries to his credit. Chasing the 200-run target, Mumbai started slow as Avesh Khan sent skipper Rohit Sharma cheaply for 6 in the third over and MI were reeling at 20/1 after three overs. Dewald Brevis then shifted gears and took Powerplay score to 57/1, before Avesh struck again and dismissed Brevis for the score of 31 off 13 in the sixth over. In the very next over, Marcus Stoinis bowled Ishan Kishan for the score of 13 off 17. Then, Suryakumar Yadav and young Tilak Verma (26) started to rebuild the innings slowly. The duo went on to stitch a 68-run partnership for the fourth wicket before Jason Holder bowled Verma in the 15th over. In the next over Ravi Bishnoi got the big fish Suryakumar for the score of 37 off 27, who pulled the short ball but found the fielder at deep square. Kieron Pollard shifted momentum in MI’s favour with his big hits. But Avesh cleaned up Fabian Allen (8) in the 18th over to get his third and again turned the faced of the match. MI needed 26 off the last over, but Pollard and Unadkat had a mix-up and the latter got run-out. The drama continued as Murugan Ashwin came to the crease and went for maximum on very first ball he faced, before he too got run-out in the next ball. On the penultimate ball of the match, Pollard got caught by Stoinis off the bowling of Dushmanta Chameera. For LSG, Avesh scalped three wickets. Holder, Chameera, Bishnoi and Stoinis got one wicket each. Earlier, Lucknow got off to a good start after being put into bat, as they posted 57 runs for the loss of one wicket in the Powerplay. Mumbai debutant Allen trapped Quinton de Kock, who attempted reverse-sweep in the sixth over. Manish Pandey then joined captain Rahul and picked up from where de Kock had left. The duo added 72 runs off 47 deliveries. In between, few misfields from Mumbai handed easy boundaries to Lucknow batters. In the 14th over, Ashwin got rid off Pandey for the score of 38 to break the partnership. Unadkat then sent Stoinis (10) back to give MI a much-needed breakthrough in the 17th over. In the penultimate over, skipper Rahul brought up his second century as a captain in his 100th IPL game, overall third century in the IPL. With two balls left in the innings, Deepak Hodda (15 off 8) got caught by Ishan off the bowling of Unadkat, who conceded just 4 runs in the final over. For MI, Unadkat claimed two wickets and conceded 32 runs in his four over quota. Ashwin and Allen got one wickets apeice. Jasprit Bumrah, who has been the most economical bowler, remained wicketless.
