New Delhi, August 25: The Melbourne Stars have announced the appointment of former Yorkshire all-rounder Richard Pyrah as their new head coach for the upcoming season of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), which is managed by Cricket Australia (CA).
James Rosenberg, the General Manager of Melbourne Stars, stated, “He is an experienced coach for both women’s and men’s teams. He will bring a diverse set of skills to the team. His arrival will strengthen our club. Andy did a fantastic job leading our team to the WBBL finals last season, and it was crucial for him to remain with us.”
Rosenberg added, “Pyrah is already coaching several of our players in the Victorian women’s team. His prior coaching experience will be invaluable for us next season.”
Currently, Richard Pyrah serves as the coach for Yorkshire Women, marking his third season with the team. He was also an assistant coach with the Sunrisers Leeds in the Women’s Hundred this season, working alongside players like Annabel Sutherland. Previously, he worked as a consultant in the BBL with the Melbourne Renegades and Adelaide Strikers between 2015 and 2017.
In a significant change, the Stars have also promoted last season’s coach Andy Christie to the role of assistant coach. Under Christie’s guidance, the Melbourne Stars reached the knockout stage last season, where they faced a defeat against the Perth Scorchers. However, it was announced last season that Christie would return to the assistant coach role to focus on his head coach responsibilities with Victoria in the WNCL.
The Melbourne Stars’ roster includes not only Annabel Sutherland but also cricketing legends like Meg Lanning, Marizanne Kapp, Amy Jones, and Kim Garth. Under Pyrah’s leadership, the team aims to compete for the title next season.
