Meghalayas Tura Returns to Normalcy Following Unrest: CM Conrad Sangmas Visit

Shillong, March 12: In Tura, located in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district, conditions are gradually returning to normal after two days of unrest. On Thursday, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma visited the affected areas to assess the situation and directed officials to provide immediate food assistance to those impacted.

During his visit, the Chief Minister engaged with local residents and inspected areas that experienced vandalism and arson. He instructed the district administration to ensure that essential supplies reach areas where shortages have arisen due to the unrest.

Local residents informed the Chief Minister about the scarcity of rice and other essential items in approximately 17 settlements around the Arimail area due to the violence. In response, Sangma directed the Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills to coordinate with local development committees to compile a list of affected families, ensuring that relief materials are distributed promptly.

The Chief Minister emphasized the need for the administration to guarantee immediate assistance and necessary supplies to the impacted families. He also inspected shops, homes, and other properties that were damaged during the violence, assuring those affected that the government would provide essential support.

Meanwhile, residents in various areas of Tura have voluntarily initiated a cleanup campaign to restore normalcy. Local community members, youth groups, and organizations have been seen clearing debris, broken items, and burnt materials from the streets.

It is noteworthy that the unrest began earlier this week during protests against the participation of non-tribals in the upcoming elections for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council. The situation escalated into violence following incidents of vandalism and arson by alleged troublemakers in some areas.

Currently, the administration has tightened security measures and is continuously coordinating with community leaders to maintain peace.
