Shillong, September 29 (Daily Kiran) : Meghalaya’s Cabinet Minister and BJP leader Sunbor Shullai defended the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process on Tuesday. He emphasized that this initiative is crucial to ensure that ineligible individuals, including illegal immigrants, do not gain voting rights.
Shullai accused the Congress party and its allies in the India bloc of spreading misinformation about the Election Commission of India (ECI) and creating confusion regarding the voter list revision. Responding to opposition criticism, he pointed out that a joint press note issued after a full meeting of the commission refuted these allegations.
In a statement, Shullai asserted that the press note clearly demonstrated that the Congress and its coalition partners were fabricating lies to mislead the public. He urged Meghalaya not to be swayed by the ‘false claims’ made by the Congress.
He also noted that all three election commissioners acted unanimously on key decisions and dismissed allegations of internal disagreements within the commission. Shullai reiterated that the SIR is a vital step to prevent illegal immigrants from participating in the electoral process.
According to official records, the SIR has involved door-to-door verification of 2,349,645 voters, with a draft voter list published in August. The process is currently in the notice and hearing phase, with the final voter list set to be released in October.
Shullai mentioned the judicial scrutiny of the process and questioned Congress’s criticisms of the SIR requirements. He accused the opposition of routinely attacking constitutional institutions, including the Election Commission and the judiciary, in the face of electoral failures.
He claimed that the voters of Meghalaya have rejected the Congress and its allies, who are now attempting to create political instability by questioning the electoral process. He urged the public not to fall for what he termed ‘malicious propaganda,’ advocating for the view that the voter list revision is aimed at ensuring fairness in the electoral process.
Congress has separately raised objections to the functioning of the Election Commission and the SIR process, making voter list revision a significant political controversy.
