London, March 16 : World no 1 tennis player Daniil Medvedev of Russia needs to give assurance that he is not a supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin if he want to compete at the Wimbledon, UK Sports Minister, Nigel Huddleston said. “Absolutely nobody flying the flag for Russia should be allowed or enabled. We need some potential assurance that they are not supporters of Putin and we are considering what requirements we may need to try and get some assurances along those lines.” CNN quoted Huddleston as saying on Tuesday. Huddleston also said that he is in touch with the tournament organizers, the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), and that discussions were taking place. The Grand Slam tournament is scheduled to take place from June 27 and July 10 and Russian and Belarusian players are not allowed to compete under their country’s flags and names following Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine. Tennis teams from the two countries have also been disqualified from the Davis Cup and the Billie Jean King Cup while the WTA and ATP combined events scheduled to take place in Moscow in October have been suspended. All the International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournaments in Russia and Belarus have also been cancelled. BAV JNA
