Lucknow, February 25: The Income Tax Department conducted a raid at the residence of Uma Shankar Singh, the sole Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA in Uttar Pradesh, in Lucknow. BSP leader Mayawati responded to the incident, calling it extremely unfortunate and against humanity, especially given Singh’s severe illness.
Mayawati took to the social media platform X to express her concerns. She stated that since joining the BSP, MLA Uma Shankar Singh has fulfilled his responsibilities with utmost honesty and dedication. There have been no complaints regarding any illegal acquisition of property or wrongdoing associated with him in his constituency.
For nearly two years, Singh has been battling a serious illness. Mayawati suggested that if the Income Tax Department had received any complaints about him, they should have waited for his recovery before proceeding with inquiries. While she emphasized that they do not wish to interfere with the operations of any department, she condemned the timing of the raid, stating it was highly unfortunate and against humanity.
Reports indicate that early Tuesday morning, over three dozen officials arrived at Singh’s residence under heavy police protection, causing a stir in the area.
According to sources, the Income Tax team arrived around 7 AM and sealed off the premises. A team of about 30 officials, assisted by local police, began investigating financial transactions and property-related documents.
During the search, officials reviewed files, electronic devices, and other records found in the house. MLA Uma Shankar Singh represents the Rasra area in Ballia district and is currently fighting cancer. He is the only BSP MLA in the state.
