New Delhi, August 14: Veteran midfielder Manpreet Singh of the Indian hockey team has expressed that the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 could be his final appearance on this grand stage. He aims to make this World Cup memorable by clinching the title.
Manpreet stated on GeoStar, “This World Cup means a lot to me. It’s my fourth World Cup. We have won consecutive Olympic medals, but a World Cup medal still eludes us. Every player dreams of achieving both. For me, this could be my last World Cup, so I am approaching it with that mindset. I am determined to achieve what we have yet to accomplish.”
He added, “The team possesses the experience and talent to move forward. We have prepared well, and there’s a lot of confidence. Indian sports are progressing everywhere, and hockey is no exception. We have won Olympic medals, and now it’s time to advance in the World Cup.”
Manpreet expressed full trust in his team, highlighting a good balance of youth and experience. He noted that he, along with captain Harmanpreet Singh and Mandeep Singh, has shared insights with younger players about what works, what doesn’t, and how to approach each match with complete focus. “Every match in the tournament is crucial. We must enter with the right mindset, respect every opponent, and play to win. Our coach has emphasized fitness, knowing it helps us compete against the best. We have also worked hard on our defense. A strong defense gives us the confidence to attack and control the game,” he explained.
Regarding captain Harmanpreet Singh, Manpreet praised his leadership skills. He said, “He is an excellent captain who leads from the front and guides everyone on the field. He inspires players during tough times and keeps the team calm under pressure. His ability to read the game is exceptional. His passing range, whether long overheads or ground passes, is outstanding.”
Manpreet added, “He communicates effectively and organizes the defense efficiently. He is one of the best drag-flickers in the world. His hits are powerful and varied, and he always steps up when the team needs him the most. Having a captain like him instills confidence in the entire team.”
Manpreet is optimistic that India will reach the finals and hopes for historic success. The Indian team last won a medal in the Hockey World Cup in 1975. After securing consecutive Olympic medals in Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, Team India is hopeful of ending a 51-year medal drought at the Hockey World Cup 2026.
