Mandhana, Harmanpreet shine as India beat WI

Hamilton, March 12 : Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur hammered centuries as India beat West Indies by 155 runs in the ICC Women’ Cricket World Cup match at the Seddon Park here on Saturday. Mandhana and Kaur added 184 runs together for the fourth wicket to help India cross the 300-run mark for the first time in World Cups. Interestingly, India’s previous best (284/6) had also come against West Indies during the 2013 edition. The duo’s partnership, which powered India to post 317/8, also surpassed Thirush Kamini and Punam Raut’s 175-run stand (in 2013), recording India’s highest partnership in World Cups. Chasing an imposing target of 318, West Indies had a dream start with openers Deandra Dottin and Hayley Matthews adding 100 runs together. Dottin smashed 10 boundaries and one maximum before Sneh Rana got the big breakthrough. Dottin (62 off 46 balls) got a top-edge and was caught at short fine-leg. Pacer Meghna Singh rattled the middle-order, removing Kycia Knight (5) and Stafanie Taylor (1) in quick succession. Rana further dented West Indies’ chase as the off-spinner bagged the crucial wicket of Matthews, who was caught behind for 43. Veteran fast bowler Jhulan Goswami, who at one point conceded five fours from Matthews, became the all-time highest wicket-taker in World Cups with 40 wickets to her name. No other West Indian could manage to get their side out of trouble and West Indies folded for 162 in 40.3 overs. Earlier, an unchanged India got off to a flying start after electing to bat in their third fixture of the tournament. While Mandhana was much more cautious, Yastika Bhatia (31) fired six boundaries before departing off Shakera Selman. West Indies’ fielding was superb but in patches, with Matthews pulling off a one hander at slip to remove Deepti Sharma for 15. Dottin once again demonstrated her brilliant athleticism, saving a host of runs. India skipper Mithali Raj (5), who walked out at no.3, holed out to mid-wicket off Matthews. Mandhana and Kaur got into rebuilding, with their quick strike rotation and frequent boundaries. The duo stitched a solid 184-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Both Mandhana and Kaur brought up their fifth and fourth ODI centuries respectively, as India inched closer to the 300-run mark. Shamilia Connell finally got rid of Mandhana (123 off 119 balls) as the left-hander smacked one straight to deep mid-wicket. Kaur (109 off 107 balls) also returned to dug out but not before taking India past the 300-run mark. On an Aaliyah Alleyne delivery, Kaur was caught behind while attempting to paddle sweep. Both Mandhana and Kaur were welcomed by their teammates with a standing ovation. Brief scores: India 317/8 in 50 overs (Smriti Mandhana 123, Harmanpreet Kaur 109; Anisa Mohammed 2/59) beat West Indies 162/10 in 40.3 overs (Deandra Dottin 62, Hayley Matthews 43; Sneh Rana 3/22) by 155 runs.
