Both milk and yogurt have a low glycemic index, which means they do not cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels. However, it is essential to consider the timing and quantity of consumption. Both foods are beneficial for diabetes patients as they help regulate blood sugar levels and are rich in calcium and protein, which strengthen bones, support healthy gut bacteria, and aid in appetite control.
Now, let’s discuss the correct way to consume these foods. Starting with milk, the glycemic index of one cup of milk or yogurt ranges between 30-40, making it suitable for diabetes patients. It is recommended that they consume 500 grams of milk daily, divided into smaller portions. Patients should avoid full-fat milk and opt for low-fat alternatives, ensuring that no sweeteners are added. If a sweet craving arises, natural dates can be added to the milk. Milk can be consumed in the morning and at night.
As for yogurt, Ayurveda suggests consuming it during the day. Avoid adding any sweeteners to yogurt; instead, enhance its flavor with roasted cumin and black salt. A single serving of yogurt should be about one bowl.
