Kolkata, May 9: After the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a significant victory and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) faced a defeat, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made her first public appearance since May 4. She urged like-minded parties across the country to unite against the BJP.
As the leader of the TMC, Banerjee appealed to all anti-BJP political forces, whether leftist or right-wing, to join hands with her party.
She stated, “There is a wave of post-election violence across the state. I call upon all anti-BJP forces, all student and youth organizations, and all non-governmental organizations to unite. We want to form a united front against the BJP.”
Banerjee also emphasized that even her former political rival, the CPI(M), and the left front in West Bengal are welcome to join this coalition against the BJP.
“The leftists, extreme leftists, and any other national party are welcome. Let us come together and unite. Anyone who wishes to contact me is welcome. From now on, I will be in my office every day from 4 PM to 6 PM. My primary enemy is the enemy,” she added.
In response to Banerjee’s call, CPI(M) Politburo member and West Bengal state secretary Mohd. Salim refrained from direct comments. Instead, he recited lines from a poem by Gurudev Tagore: “When life seems to dry up, come as a stream of compassion.”
The significance of this poem highlights Banerjee’s realization of the importance of other anti-BJP forces, especially after the TMC’s recent defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections, where she herself lost the Bhawanipur seat to new Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
