Pune, May 10: In a significant operation, Pune police have dismantled an inter-state gang involved in the theft of copper cables belonging to Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) in the Wanwadi area. Nine suspects have been arrested, with police seizing goods valued at approximately ₹80.7 lakh. This operation has revealed a large cable theft racket active in the region.
According to reports, the Wanwadi police station’s investigation team conducted a combing operation from the night of May 8 to the early hours of May 9. During this time, they received a tip-off about individuals extracting copper cables from a drainage line near Honeywell in the Hadapsar industrial area. The suspects were reportedly using a crane to pull out the cables, cutting them into pieces, and loading them onto an Eicher truck.
Upon receiving the information, Police Sub-Inspector Alfaz Sheikh and his team arrived at the scene. They apprehended the suspects red-handed. Investigations revealed that the accused were stealing BSNL’s copper cables that had been placed inside the drainage pipeline.
The arrested individuals hail from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Pune. They have been identified as Aslam Sagir Khan, Arif Bundukhan Khan, Shoaib Haroon Khan, Salman Idris Malik, Naresh Kumar Shree Shivcharan, Navi Mohammad, Anis Ansari, Afak Ansari, and Pravin Bagul.
Police have confiscated copper wires worth ₹34.8 lakh, along with the crane used for extraction, the Eicher truck, and a moped, totaling ₹80.7 lakh in seized items.
A case has been registered at the Wanwadi police station under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. The investigation is being led by Police Sub-Inspector Alfaz Sheikh.
This operation is considered a significant success, guided by the leadership of Additional Police Commissioner Manoj Patil, Deputy Commissioner Rajalakshmi Shivankar, and Assistant Commissioner Namrata Desai, under the direction of Senior Police Inspector Bhau Saheb Patil and Police Inspector Sangeeta Jadhav.
