New Delhi, February 3: Kumaun University is undergoing significant educational reforms in line with the National Education Policy. The initiative aims to provide high-quality education comparable to that of IITs and IIMs. New campuses are being developed for departments including Mathematics, Yoga, Music, IT Labs, Law, Hotel Management, and Pharmacy. The university is transforming into an international-level institution as envisioned by the central government.
Vice-Chancellor Professor D.S. Rawat announced that the university has received the status of a Multidisciplinary Education and Research University (MERU), with an allocation of approximately ₹1 billion.
Institutions designated as MERU under the National Education Policy 2020 aim to offer comprehensive and multidisciplinary education akin to IITs and IIMs. According to the Ministry of Education, MERU institutions integrate research and education, contributing to India’s goal of becoming a global educational hub.
Professor Rawat emphasized that these initiatives are designed to establish Kumaun University as a strong academic center, both nationally and internationally. During his visit to Delhi, he also mentioned that the university has been approved for the ANRF-Pair Project, which also has a funding of around ₹1 billion. As part of innovative educational practices, the university has launched the ‘Vidya Setu’ program to enhance academic collaboration with major institutions across the country. Additionally, a corpus fund of ₹100 million has been established to promote research.
A significant initiative includes financial support for patent-related work at the university. To encourage quality research, PhD students are being offered fellowships, funding for seminars and conferences, and internal research grants. New facilities such as a Hydroponic Research Center, Herbal Tea Lab, Herbal Production Unit, and Biofloc Fish Technology Unit have been introduced. Open house discussions with PhD students, WhatsApp groups for faculty communication, and school-university connect programs are also underway. A book on the university’s history has been published, and a ‘One Nation One Subscription’ system has been implemented.
Professor Rawat stated that 26.4 acres of land has been acquired in Patwadangar for the new campus, where 11 new academic buildings are being constructed. These include facilities for Mathematics, Yoga, Music, examination halls, IT labs, Law, Hotel Management, Pharmacy, and more. The foundation stone for the MERU campus has already been laid. Additionally, labs, conference halls, guest houses, hostels, a Himalayan museum, residential buildings, roads, and the renovation of heritage buildings are in progress. A 788-kilowatt solar panel, rowing simulator for NCC, an indoor firing range, and a new reading room in the central library have also been established.
For students, programs such as Tata Stride, an industry lounge in collaboration with CII, and free SSB training are being offered. Students can now receive their degrees within the same year, even without a convocation ceremony. UG and PG students benefit from internships at ₹5,000 per month, placement support, talent hunts, and MOUs with 28 institutions. Research grants, free education for orphaned students, and encouragement through a toppers’ conclave are also part of the initiatives.
Notably, the Vice-Chancellor is personally conducting classes and engaging directly with students. Students are being awarded e-books, access to the KU Open E-Library, Library Champion Awards, and recognition for research publications and translations in the Kumaoni language. Professor D.S. Rawat stated that these measures are aimed at advancing Kumaun University in the fields of education, research, and innovation. In the future, the university is expected to play a crucial role in the development of Uttarakhand and the nation while fulfilling the goals of the National Education Policy.
