Kolkata, August 12: A significant attempt to smuggle drugs in the Kaliachak area of Malda district, West Bengal, was thwarted by police. Acting on a tip-off, officers from the Kaliachak police station seized nearly three kilograms of brown sugar early Wednesday morning and arrested two traffickers.
According to officials, the estimated value of the seized narcotics in the international market is around ₹4 crore. The arrested suspects were presented in the Malda district court on Wednesday, where police requested a 10-day custody. Court sources indicate that the Chief District and Sessions Judge granted seven days of police custody for the accused.
Police reported receiving information on Tuesday evening about a large-scale drug trafficking operation in the Haruchak Matiyali area. Subsequently, plainclothes officers were deployed throughout the region.
Around 1 AM, police found the activities of two young men suspicious. They were stopped for questioning but failed to provide satisfactory answers. A search of their bags revealed a substantial quantity of narcotics.
After initial questioning at the station, both individuals were arrested. The suspects have been identified as 21-year-old Noor Alam and 28-year-old Sarikul Sheikh, residents of the Shrirampur area in the Kismatpur village of Kaliachak.
A total of 2 kilograms and 850 grams of brown sugar was confiscated from their possession. A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS Act), 1985. Police are seeking custody of the accused to investigate the source of the drugs, their intended destination, and any other individuals involved in the operation.
Malda District Superintendent of Police Anupam Singh stated, “The Kaliachak police have arrested two individuals with nearly three kilograms of narcotics. We are fully committed to combating drug trafficking in the district and are maintaining constant surveillance throughout the area.”
