Maharashtra Government Forms Special Cell to Locate Missing Women

Mumbai, March 4: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Wednesday that the state government has established a special cell dedicated to locating missing women. This cell will be led by a senior female officer at the ADG level.

CM Fadnavis stated that the cell will be responsible for planning and implementing search operations. Over the past year, the efforts of this special cell have resulted in a 10 percent increase in the number of missing women found.

During the question session, Niranjan Davkhare raised a query, and Bhai Jagatap followed up with additional questions.

The Chief Minister explained that regular meetings are being held under the leadership of female officers, and campaigns are being conducted statewide to locate missing women.

In the first year, approximately 55 to 60 percent of missing women are located, and this figure increases to 90 percent within two and a half to three years. He emphasized that the government aims to raise this success rate to 95-96 percent, and efforts will continue until this goal is achieved. Each year, new action plans are being developed to strengthen the search operations.

Home State Minister Pankaj Bhoyar reported that from July 2015 to December 2024, 13 campaigns under ‘Operation Muskaan’ have been conducted, successfully locating 41,193 boys and girls.

The 14th ‘Operation Muskaan’ campaign is currently underway from January 20 to February 20. As of February 16, a total of 1,401 children (454 boys and 947 girls) have been found.

The minister also mentioned that a special initiative named ‘Operation Shodh’ is being run to locate missing women and children. To enhance safety, the state has established the ‘Nirbhaya Squad’ and increased police patrols to prevent crimes against women and girls. Initiatives such as ‘Police Uncle’ and ‘Police Didi’ have also been launched.

Additionally, helplines for women have been set up in all police stations across the state.
