Mahanadi river tragedy: Toll rises to five, one missing

Bhubaneswar, Mar 19 : With the recovery of three more bodies on Saturday, the death toll in the Friday drowning incident in river Mahanadi at Manglaghat near Badasuar village in Jajpur district has risen to five. Seven youths were swept away by the strong current of the river Mahanadi on Friday while taking bath after playing Holi. The local people managed to rescue one youth and rushed him to hospital but two youth drowned and four others went missing. After a long rescue operation by the ODRAF and local people, three bodies were recovered on Saturday and one is still missing. The search operation is on to trace him. Sources said while bathing one of the seven youths slipped into the deep river and the other six swept away while trying to save him. Meanwhile, a report reaching here said four other youths were drowned in different parts of the state on Saturday. While two were drowned at Baniaghat in river Indravati near Kotpad in the Koraput district, one each drowned in Keonjhar and Cuttack while bathing after playing Holi. BD DP RN
