Bhopal, February 5: Madhya Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Deora announced on Thursday that the state government’s upcoming budget for 2026-27 will adopt a ‘rolling budget’ approach. This strategy will extend the planning framework through 2028.
During a special conversation while visiting his home district of Mandsaur, Deora, who also oversees the finance ministry, emphasized that the budget will be “entirely dedicated to the people of Madhya Pradesh.” Key focus areas will include women’s empowerment, job creation for youth, and welfare initiatives for farmers and the underprivileged.
Deora stated, “The 2026-27 budget will be based on a rolling budget approach, meaning we are planning with a three-year perspective. I assure you that this budget will be dedicated to the overall development of Madhya Pradesh.”
He highlighted that the budget is being prepared after extensive consultations with representatives from all sectors of society, including economic experts, to ensure inclusive and sustainable development.
Comparing it to last year’s efforts, the Deputy Chief Minister noted that the 2025-26 budget was created using a ‘zero-based budgeting’ approach. Under this system, all state departments were asked to reassess their actual financial needs instead of relying on previous allocations.
He added, “Last year, we adopted zero-based budgeting and requested detailed information on actual expenses and future needs from every department. This year, continuing that work, we are introducing a three-year framework to bring continuity and long-term planning to the budget.”
The state government’s budget for 2025-26 was set at ₹4.21 lakh crore. The Madhya Pradesh Assembly will convene on February 16 for the ninth session of the 16th Assembly. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav recently announced that the budget for the financial year 2026-27 will be presented in the house on February 18.
This will be the first major assembly session of 2026 led by the Chief Minister’s BJP government, which holds 163 seats in the 230-member house. The Congress party, with 66 legislators, is expected to challenge the government on issues such as inflation, unemployment, and farmers’ concerns.
Given the state’s significant tribal and rural population, the session is likely to emphasize inclusive development, infrastructure growth, and agricultural support, including the implementation of central government schemes like PM-Kisan and Ayushman Bharat.
