Bhopal, September 3 (Daily Kiran) : Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya announced on Thursday that the Madhya Pradesh government is exploring a compromise regarding the sealing of commercial establishments in residential areas of Bhopal. Senior officials have been dispatched to Delhi to consult with legal experts on the matter.
Speaking to the media in Bhopal, Vijayvargiya emphasized the government’s aim to find a middle ground that both complies with Supreme Court directives and mitigates the economic impact on local businesses and residents. This initiative comes amid rising discontent among traders following the resumption of sealing actions by the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) in recent weeks.
“We are seeking advice from senior lawyers to ensure that the government can present a strong case before the Supreme Court and find a solution that protects the residents of Bhopal who are suffering losses. We are confident that a resolution will emerge,” he stated.
The BMC’s actions are a response to Supreme Court directives concerning violations of land use regulations, targeting commercial establishments operating in residential neighborhoods. This crackdown has sparked protests from traders and business organizations, who express concern over the adverse effects on commerce and livelihoods.
In the past, the state government attempted to intervene, asking the municipal body to halt sealing actions and forming a committee to investigate the issue. However, the Supreme Court later halted the government’s intervention, instructing officials to adhere to previous orders, leading to the BMC’s renewed sealing efforts across various parts of Bhopal.
Traders argue that many affected businesses have been operating for years, and sudden sealing could lead to significant financial losses. They are calling for changes to land use regulations to allow existing commercial activities to continue without disruption.
This ongoing dispute has also brought attention to the long-stalled Bhopal Master Plan. Vijayvargiya noted that discussions regarding the master plan are underway, with a decision expected soon. A revised planning framework could clarify how to regulate commercial activities in areas currently designated as residential.
He acknowledged the discontent among those affected by the sealing campaign but reiterated that this issue pertains solely to Bhopal. “There is some dissatisfaction and protest among the people of Bhopal. However, the government is continually seeking solutions,” he concluded.
The matter remains under consideration by the Supreme Court, with the next hearing scheduled for September 15.
