Brasilia, September 19 (Daily Kiran) : Brazil is gearing up for presidential elections, with campaigns intensifying as key issues emerge. Among them are proposed increases in welfare payments for low-income families, the announcement of free weight loss medications, and calls for stricter laws against femicide.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has pledged a 15% increase in payments for the Bolsa Família program, which supports impoverished families. This announcement comes just two weeks before the elections, raising concerns from the opposition about potential voter manipulation.
Lula argues that the increase in Bolsa Família is a necessary adjustment to keep pace with inflation, aimed at preserving the purchasing power of poor families. The monthly payment, currently around 98 pounds, will rise to approximately 113 pounds, effective October 19—just after the presidential election on October 4 and a possible runoff on October 25.
Bolsa Família, Brazil’s flagship cash transfer program, was initiated during Lula’s first term in 2003 and has helped millions escape poverty. Currently, nearly 50 million people benefit from this initiative, including around 27 million eligible voters.
Opposition candidate Flávio Bolsonaro has condemned Lula’s announcement, labeling it as a desperate attempt to buy votes from the poor. Lula maintains that the increase is a necessary response to inflation over the past years.
Additionally, Lula’s government has promised to provide free weight loss medications through the public health system. This commitment comes as the country prepares for the elections, with the main contest expected to be between Lula and Bolsonaro.
Legal experts have raised questions regarding election laws, suggesting that adjusting benefits for inflation may not be inherently restricted. Right-wing candidate Renan Santos has filed a petition with the electoral court to halt the increase until the newly elected president assumes office.
Lula is also focusing on female voters, who are projected to make up about 53% of the electorate. He has been actively promoting women’s rights on social media, emphasizing the need for personal time, stricter laws against crime, and overall empowerment for women.
