Mumbai, September 19 (Daily Kiran) : Music composer and singer Salim Merchant recently visited the Kamakhya Temple in Assam, and his trip has ignited a wave of reactions on social media. After posting pictures from the temple on Instagram, where he is seen standing with his hands folded alongside a friend, users took to the platform to express their opinions.
In the photos, Salim is dressed in a white T-shirt and black pants, adorned with a garland and a red scarf draped over his shoulder. He captioned the images in Hindi, stating, “At the feet of the divine, Om Aim Hreem Kleem Kamakhya Namah.”
The response to Salim’s post has been mixed. While many users praised his respectful attitude towards other religions, some criticized him, arguing that his religious identity should not permit such actions. This incident is not the first time a public figure has faced scrutiny for their beliefs.
Salim Merchant has openly expressed his faith in Hindu deities and regularly participates in religious practices. He has previously mentioned his devotion to Lord Shiva, performing rituals every Monday, while also attending Friday prayers for Jummah. Salim emphasizes that he respects both religions and finds it challenging to articulate his deep connection to God and music.
Known for his musical duo with his brother, Sulaiman Merchant, Salim has contributed memorable soundtracks and background scores to over 40 films in Hindi cinema. His notable works include “Chak De! India,” “Fashion,” “Band Baaja Baaraat,” “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi,” and “Kurbaan.” He has also performed at major global events, including the FIFA World Cup.
