Liverpool Secures Quarter-Final Spot in Carabao Cup After Penalty Shootout Victory Over Chelsea

Liverpool defeated Chelsea 6-5 on penalties to advance to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, with Bournemouth also securing their place.

New Delhi, October 29 (Daily Kiran) : Liverpool Football Club clinched a spot in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup by defeating Chelsea 6-5 in a tense penalty shootout at Anfield. Chelsea’s manager, Xabi Alonso, faced disappointment in his return to the venue.

The match was fiercely contested, with both teams scoring one goal each during regulation time. Morgan Rogers opened the scoring for Chelsea in the last five minutes of the first half. However, Cody Gakpo equalized for Liverpool, bringing the score to 1-1. Ultimately, Liverpool triumphed in the shootout, with Joe Gomez converting his penalty while Wesley Fofana missed his attempt, sealing the match’s outcome.

This victory marks Liverpool’s third consecutive win over Chelsea in their last three encounters in the Carabao Cup. They will next face AFC Bournemouth in the quarter-finals. Bournemouth secured their place by defeating five-time champions Aston Villa 3-0 at the Vitality Stadium. Amin Adli scored a stunning goal in the seventh minute, giving Bournemouth an early lead. Although they dominated the first half, they couldn’t extend their advantage further.

In the sixth minute of the second half, Lewis Cook doubled the lead with his first goal in over two years. Alvaro Rodriguez capped off the scoring in the 69th minute, finishing a brilliant shot from Tyler Adams into the net.

With this victory, Bournemouth has reached the quarter-finals for the fourth time in their history, completing a memorable ‘triple’ after previously defeating European champions AC Milan and Manchester United.

In another match, Crystal Palace secured their fifth consecutive win, thanks to a brilliant goal from Eddie Nketiah at Craven Cottage. This victory propelled the club into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals for the third straight season, a first in their history. The Eagles maintained an impressive record at Fulham’s ground, overcoming a challenging defensive test with Nketiah’s skillful run and flick, alongside a hard-earned clean sheet.

Crystal Palace will now face Sunderland at Selhurst Park in the quarter-finals. This marks the first time in the club’s history that they have reached this stage for three consecutive seasons. Sunderland turned around a poor league start with an impressive 3-2 victory over Brentford at the Stadium of Light. Three first-half goals nearly secured their win, although Callum Wilson provided some relief with a goal just before halftime, followed by another from Igor Thiago later in the match.
