
New Delhi, 3 January – The day of 5 January holds a special place in the cricket world. On this day in 2020, Leo Carter, a batsman from New Zealand’s domestic Canterbury team, achieved the rare feat of hitting six sixes in a single over during a T20 match.
The match was part of the Super Smash 2019-20 season, played between Canterbury and Northern Knights in Christchurch. Northern Knights batted first and scored 219 runs for the loss of seven wickets.
The team lost Anton Devcich early at 11 runs, scoring 7 runs. Dean Brownlie then joined Tim Seifert to build a strong second-wicket partnership, adding 119 runs in 54 balls and taking the score to 130.
Seifert played a powerful innings, scoring 74 runs off 36 balls with six sixes and five fours. Brownlie contributed 55 runs off 29 balls with two sixes and eight fours. McConchie played an unbeaten innings of 49 runs off 25 balls with three sixes and four fours. Carter remained not out at 70 runs from 29 balls, striking seven sixes and three fours. During his innings, Carter made history by hitting six consecutive sixes in the 16th over, bowled by spinner Anton Devcich.
Carter’s six sixes came in this sequence: the first ball was dispatched over backward square leg, the second and third balls went to deep mid-wicket, the fourth ball again over deep square leg, the fifth ball to long on, and the final ball over deep square leg.
This extraordinary over added to the excitement and is remembered as a landmark moment in cricket history.
