Mumbai, February 21: Renowned actor Kunal Kapoor has voiced his support for restricting children’s access to social media. He highlighted the negative impact of social media misuse and the rising influence of AI on children’s mental health, education, and personality.

On Saturday, Kapoor emphasized that this initiative is not anti-technology but rather a step towards ensuring a better future for children. He pointed out that social media algorithms are designed to keep children scrolling for hours, adversely affecting their concentration, sleep, and emotional well-being.

Sharing a news article on his official social media platform X, Kunal noted that the Indian government is considering a ban on social media for children under 16 in a country with a population of 1.4 billion.

In his response to the news, Kapoor stated, “Our country needs this. It is not anti-tech, but for the betterment of children’s futures. We must protect children from algorithms designed to foster addiction. This also gives us the opportunity to create domestic platforms that focus on growth rather than just engagement.”

The central government is contemplating changes to the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, to restrict social media access for individuals under 16.

Since Australia’s government announced a complete ban on social media for children, many prominent figures, including Sonakshi Sinha, Sonu Sood, and Shilpa Shetty, have praised the move.
