Koraput, Odisha: The Koraput district administration has withdrawn the one-day ban on the sale of meat and other non-vegetarian food items that was initially imposed for the 77th Republic Day celebrations on January 26.
The district Collector, Manoj Satyavan Mahajan, issued a new directive on Sunday, cancelling the earlier order and informing all tehsildars, Block Development Officers (BDOs), and other executive officials about the reversal of the ban.
Initial Ban Based on Committee Recommendation
The original decision to prohibit the sale of meat, chicken, fish, eggs, and other non-vegetarian foods was taken following suggestions from the district-level Republic Day preparation committee. However, following widespread reactions and detailed deliberations, the Collector decided to revoke the order issued on January 23.
Order Revoked Amid Public Response
The recently issued order clearly states that the January 23 directive banning the sale of non-vegetarian items on Republic Day is cancelled with immediate effect. It acknowledges that the earlier instruction was based on the committee’s recommendation but has now been withdrawn after considering public sentiment and practical concerns.
Public Debate and Administrative Clarity
Earlier, the Collector had instructed officials to ensure strict enforcement of the ban in their respective areas. This move triggered significant debate both within the district and across the state. Many questioned the appropriateness of such restrictions on a national occasion like Republic Day, emphasizing that it is not a religious event and hence should not involve food sale curbs. The issue sparked discussions on social media and other public forums.
With the withdrawal of the ban, the administration has clarified its position, reflecting responsiveness to public opinion. On the 26th of January, there will be no restrictions on the sale of meat and other non-vegetarian products in Koraput district.
