Kolkata, August 25: The Kolkata High Court‘s single bench granted permission on Tuesday for both factions of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to celebrate the foundation day of the party’s student wing, Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), separately on August 28. However, the court did not allow either faction to hold their events at their preferred locations.
Both factions had filed petitions in front of Justice Sougata Bhattacharya, seeking permission to organize an event on Mayo Road in central Kolkata. This location was traditionally used for such events before the party split into two factions.
On Tuesday, Justice Bhattacharya’s bench denied both factions the right to hold their events on Mayo Road. The original faction, led by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee, was permitted to hold their event on Cathedral Road in central Kolkata.
The rebel faction, led by expelled MLA and current Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Ritabrata Banerjee, was granted permission to hold their event on Rani Rashmoni Road, a short distance from Cathedral Road.
Justice Bhattacharya’s bench established certain conditions for both factions regarding their events. Each faction is restricted to gathering no more than 1,500 attendees.
Additionally, Justice Bhattacharya instructed the Kolkata Police to ensure robust security arrangements for both events. The events are scheduled to take place between 12 PM and 3 PM. Each faction must submit the names of 15 volunteers to the Joint Commissioner of Kolkata Police by 6 PM on Wednesday.
According to the court’s order, both events must remain confined to one lane of their designated locations, while the other lane should remain clear for traffic.
Traditionally, the TMCP has celebrated its foundation day on Mayo Road. There were no issues during Mamata Banerjee’s tenure as Chief Minister, but this year presents a different scenario. The TMC lost power in the 2026 Assembly elections, leading to the party’s split into two factions.
