Kolkata Enforces Section 163 of BNSS Amid Safety Concerns Following Tragic Incident

Kolkata has implemented Section 163 of BNSS for three days due to safety concerns after a deadly incident during Durga Puja.

Kolkata, October 18 (Daily Kiran) : Kolkata has enacted Section 163 of the Indian National Security Code (BNSS) around the Medical College and its vicinity from October 18 to 20. This decision follows assessments by the police commissioner regarding potential violent protests and gatherings, based on credible intelligence.

The enforcement aims to maintain public order and safety, responding to fears of disturbances that could threaten citizen security. Under this directive, no rallies, meetings, or protests will be permitted in Kolkata and surrounding areas during this period.

The move comes in the wake of a tragic stampede at a Durga Puja pandal in North Kolkata, which resulted in 19 fatalities and left 25 others injured. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari expressed deep sorrow over the incident and convened an emergency meeting at Kolkata Medical College, attended by senior officials, including Chief Secretary Manoj Agarwal.

During a press briefing, Chief Minister Adhikari confirmed that 17 of the deceased died at the scene of the stampede at the Chorbagan Sarvajanik Durga Puja pandal. He reported that 24 injured individuals are in stable condition, while one remains critical.

In response to the tragedy, the government has announced compensation for the families of the deceased, pledging ₹2.5 million and a job for each affected family. Additionally, the state will cover 100% of medical expenses for the injured, along with an extra ₹500,000 in compensation.

Adhikari urged caution during the ongoing Durga Puja festivities, where 58,000 celebrations are taking place statewide. He emphasized the importance of crowd control and adherence to safety guidelines from fire and police departments, including adequate lighting and clearly marked entry and exit points to ensure public safety.
