Seoul, February 19: Kim Yo-jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, has unexpectedly praised South Korea, a nation she has historically labeled as an adversary. This shift in tone follows a statement from Seoul expressing regret over a recent drone incursion into North Korean airspace.
According to the Yonhap News Agency, Kim expressed her admiration for South Korea’s acknowledgment of its mistake regarding the drone incident and its commitment to enhance border security.
Kim Yo-jong, who serves as the deputy director of the ruling Workers’ Party’s propaganda department, released her statement through the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). This came a day after South Korea’s Unification Minister Chung Dong-young expressed regret over the drone incursions and announced measures to prevent future occurrences.
In her statement, Kim said, “I commend ROK (Republic of Korea) Unification Minister Chung Dong-young for officially recognizing the drone incursion into our airspace and for promising to prevent such incidents from happening again.”
During a press conference, Chung acknowledged that investigations revealed South Korea had sent drones into North Korea four times between September and February, including two incidents mentioned by North Korea.
Chung also indicated that Seoul would review the suspended 2018 military agreement with North Korea, aiming to reinstate it to reduce hostilities along the border, which includes establishing a no-fly zone to prevent further drone incursions.
Earlier this January, Pyongyang accused Seoul of sending surveillance drones on September 2025 and January 4, 2026, prompting the South Korean government to initiate an official investigation.
Kim had warned that if such actions were repeated, South Korea would face “terrible consequences,” regardless of who orchestrated the incursions or how they were executed.
