New Delhi, May 12: The suspense surrounding the selection of Kerala’s Chief Minister continues, eight days after the Congress-led UDF’s victory. Despite securing 102 seats in the 140-member assembly, the UDF has yet to choose its leader, a decision anticipated immediately after the election results but now shrouded in uncertainty.
Celebrations for the electoral win persist in the state, while the Congress high command in Delhi is engaged in continuous meetings, strategizing, and internal discussions. The suspense is expected to deepen on Tuesday, as party leadership has summoned former KPCC president and senior leader Thiruvanchur Radhakrishnan for talks in Delhi.
Currently, AICC General Secretary (Organization) K.C. Venugopal appears to have the most support among the Congress’s 63 legislators. Following him in discussions are senior leaders Ramesh Chennithala and V.D. Satheesan.
However, K.C. Venugopal’s lead in the race for Chief Minister has sparked discontent among a significant faction of the party. Congress workers and supporters argue that the position should go to V.D. Satheesan, who has played a vigorous opposition role against the Pinarayi Vijayan government over the past five years.
Political analysts suggest that while K.C. Venugopal enjoys the trust of Rahul Gandhi and the central leadership, Satheesan has garnered emotional support from grassroots Congress supporters. Additionally, Ramesh Chennithala remains a strong contender due to his extensive administrative and organizational experience.
The debate has now spilled over from party offices into public discourse. The pressing question arises: why appoint a sitting MP as Kerala’s Chief Minister? However, insiders within the Congress assert that this is not a major concern for the high command. They cite examples like Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and former Union Minister A.K. Antony, who have managed state leadership while being active in national politics.
Before departing for Delhi, Thiruvanchur Radhakrishnan stated that the Chief Minister selection process has entered its final stages. Senior leader M.M. Hassan expressed optimism that there would be no further delays and that the name of the new Chief Minister would be announced soon.
