Thiruvananthapuram, August 6: The Kerala Police have ramped up their investigation into the attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials following a search at the residence of opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan. Notices have been issued to several senior leaders of the CPI(M), including state secretary M.V. Govindan, Rajya Sabha member John Brittas, and MLA V. Joy.
Police sources indicate that multiple former legislators and senior party officials have also been summoned to appear before the investigation team. This inquiry is focused on the violence that erupted after the ED officials completed their search and attempted to leave the premises. Investigators are looking into whether there was a premeditated conspiracy behind the attack.
The ED team had arrived to question Vijayan’s daughter, Veena, regarding the controversial CMRL-Exalogic financial transaction case. As the officials were leaving, they were assaulted by party workers and supporters, leading to a significant political controversy and the initiation of a criminal investigation. So far, 25 individuals have been arrested in connection with this incident.
Although the Kerala High Court granted bail to the accused in late May, the police investigation continues. The focus has now shifted from the actual attack to the potential existence of a larger conspiracy.
Investigators are trying to determine whether the attack was spontaneous or if party workers had been organized in advance to obstruct or assault the central agency officials after the search.
In the next phase of the investigation, five young leaders are scheduled for questioning on Thursday. The police aim to complete interrogations of all those who received notices within the next three weeks.
Questioning senior CPI(M) leaders is crucial, as investigators seek to uncover whether any directives were issued prior to the incident or if the crowd that allegedly attacked was gathered in a coordinated manner.
