Payyannur, April 6: The upcoming Kerala Assembly elections have turned the Payyannur constituency in Kannur district into a politically charged battleground. Allegations of electoral fraud and fierce competition among former allies are heating up the race.
Independent candidate V. Kunjikrishnan has formally lodged a complaint with the district election officer, claiming significant irregularities in the voter list.
He alleges that names of deceased individuals and those no longer residing in the constituency remain on the voter rolls, raising concerns about potential fraudulent voting.
In his complaint, Kunjikrishnan accuses booth-level officers (BLOs) of negligence for failing to remove ineligible names. He further alleges that some BLOs, reportedly influenced by leftist ideology, assisted in keeping these names on the list, thereby facilitating fraudulent voting.
The complaint also mentions the creation of fake voter ID cards in clandestine centers around Payyannur.
Before filing the complaint, Kunjikrishnan compiled a list of such voters and warned that he would approach the court if any votes were cast in the names of deceased or absent individuals.
Emphasizing the need for electoral fairness, he stated that the process must be genuinely free and impartial.
His candidacy adds a thrilling dimension to the contest. Kunjikrishnan was expelled from CPI-M after accusing the party of mishandling funds related to martyrs, leading to a bitter dispute with party leadership.
He has received support from the United Democratic Front (UDF), with senior leader Shibu Baby John effectively handing over the party’s seat in Payyannur to him.
This has set the stage for a direct and intense showdown between Kunjikrishnan and the incumbent CPI-M MLA T.I. Madhusoodan, who won the previous election by a record margin of over 49,000 votes.
Once a bastion of party unity, this constituency has now transformed into a battleground of personal and political rivalry.
