Kerala Chief Minister Satheeshan Faces Scrutiny Over Delayed Action Against ADGP

Thiruvananthapuram, July 15: Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheeshan’s handling of the controversy surrounding the delayed action against ADGP M.R. Ajith Kumar reflects the changing political landscape and the intense scrutiny that comes with his new role as the leader of the opposition.

Since taking office, Satheeshan has been measured against his own words from his time in opposition. The latest issue involves allegations against the security personnel of former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, accused of attacking Youth Congress workers in Alappuzha. It is claimed that the subsequent investigation was allegedly derailed.

Television channels have repeatedly aired Satheeshan’s strong statements demanding swift action against Ajith Kumar, highlighting the contradiction with his current stance that due legal processes must be followed.

Facing a barrage of questions on Wednesday, Satheeshan stated that the special investigation team’s report is still under consideration, and neither he nor the Home Minister has received the final report yet. He emphasized that actions cannot be taken based on a report that has not been formally received by the government.

This shift in approach has sparked debate about whether it indicates a change in attitude or merely reflects the responsibilities of governance. As the opposition leader, Satheeshan could have demanded immediate accountability. However, as Chief Minister, every administrative decision must undergo legal scrutiny.

A meeting of the police chief selection committee is scheduled soon, meaning any steps that bypass established procedures could face judicial challenges.

Satheeshan’s evolving relationship with the media is equally significant. While in opposition, he frequently criticized the Pinarayi Vijayan government for limiting journalists’ interactions and promised that the United Democratic Front government would restore regular communication with the press.

This promise has largely been fulfilled. Since taking office, Satheeshan has consistently addressed the media following cabinet meetings and remains available to answer questions regularly.
