Ken Russell shines as HIL GC beats Tamil Nadu Dragons

Ranchi witnessed an exciting match in the Men’s Hero Hockey India League (HIL) 2025-26, where HIL GC secured a 4-2 victory against Akkord Tamil Nadu Dragons. The game, held at the Marang Gomke Jaypal Singh Astro Turf Hockey Stadium, saw Ken Russell emerge as the star with a hat-trick, scoring three crucial goals for his team.

Strong start and swift goals

The Tamil Nadu Dragons began the first quarter with confidence, but in the 14th minute, HIL GC earned a penalty corner. Ken Russell, the current top scorer of the league, converted it into his seventh goal of the season, putting his team ahead. Later, in the 23rd minute, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay displayed impressive dribbling skills to assist Sam Ward, who doubled the lead with a diving finish.

Second half fightback and Russell’s brilliance

The Dragons responded strongly at the start of the second half. Blake Govers opened their account in the 32nd minute. However, just a minute later, HIL GC earned three consecutive penalty corners. Despite the Dragons’ solid defence, Ken Russell scored his second goal in the 33rd minute. The Dragons improved their gameplay but were unlucky in front of goal, with goalkeeper James Mazzarello making key saves.

Russell completes hat-trick, HIL GC tops points table

In the fourth quarter’s second minute, HIL GC got another penalty corner. Ken Russell executed a powerful drag flick over the Dragons’ goalkeeper Prince Deep Singh’s head to complete his third goal and secure his hat-trick. Although Tamil Nadu Dragons reduced the margin in the 56th minute through Uttam Singh’s goal from a sharp cross by Mohammad Rahil, it was not enough to avoid defeat. This loss marked the Dragons’ first defeat of the season, while HIL GC climbed to the top of the points table with 10 points.

After the match, Tamil Nadu Dragons’ captain Amit Rohidas acknowledged the team’s improved performance in the second half and expressed focus on delivering better results in upcoming matches.
