Karnataka Chief Minister to Address Sugarcane Price Dispute with Farmers and Mill Owners
Karnatakas Chief Minister plans meetings with sugarcane farmers and mill owners to resolve ongoing price disputes and ensure fair solutions.

Bengaluru, October 20 (Daily Kiran) : Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced on Tuesday that his government will hold separate meetings with sugarcane farmers and sugar mill owners to address ongoing issues related to sugarcane pricing. He also mentioned plans to engage with a central minister to facilitate a friendly resolution.
The announcement follows assurances from Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, who promised that a high-level committee would review the farmers’ demands. As a result, sugarcane farmers in northern Karnataka temporarily suspended their seven-day march and protest on October 19.
Earlier, Shivakumar traveled from Bengaluru to Belagavi, where he met with the protesting farmers to discuss their concerns. He proposed sending an all-party delegation to Delhi to further deliberate on the matter.
Speaking to reporters, Shivakumar stated that he has been in discussions with representatives and is working towards setting a mutually agreeable date for the meetings, considering the schedules of farmers, mill owners, and public representatives.
He emphasized the importance of resolving the issue peacefully, as it is linked to people’s livelihoods. “If farmers cultivate sugarcane, the mills will operate. Successful operation of sugar factories will ensure farmers receive fair prices for their produce. We need to work together; I do not want to place a burden on anyone. This is our collective responsibility, and we must face it together,” he said.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that he has already spoken with sugar mill owners and will consult farmers to determine an appropriate date for the meetings. He noted that the timing will also take into account the Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations and the availability of relevant stakeholders.
Shivakumar plans to invite ministers from the region, heads of relevant departments, and local MPs and MLAs to participate in the discussions.
When asked about a proposed meeting in Delhi regarding drought relief, Shivakumar indicated that he has requested a time but has yet to receive confirmation.
In a separate meeting on Monday night with Congress legislators and MLCs, discussions focused on preparations for upcoming local body elections. He stated that voter lists are expected to be available by October 27, and officials must prepare for elections according to the Supreme Court’s directives.
Shivakumar confirmed that local body elections are mandated by the Supreme Court, and necessary preparations must be made. “The government in Bengaluru must be ready, as the election commission can announce elections at any time,” he added.
He anticipates that elections for panchayats and municipalities will be completed within two to three days and affirmed that preparations for the electoral process are underway.
