Bengaluru, March 24 : The Karnataka Assembly on Thursday adopted a resolution against the Tamil Nadu Assembly’s resolution against Mekedatu project. On March 21, the TN Assembly had passed an unanimous resolution against Karnataka government’s decision to build a dam across Cauvery at Mekedatu. The neighbouring states are at odds over the Mekedatu project. Tamil Nadu argues that any construction of dam at Mekedatu will affect the interests of its farmers, as it would hinder the free flow of Cauvery water into its territory. However, Karnataka contends that the project would not hinder the free flow of Cauvery water, as it is being constructed with the sole purpose of providing drinking water to the citizens of Bengaluru. Karnataka would only use the surplus Cauvery water through Mekedatu without hindering the share of Tamil Nadu as per the Cauvery Dispute Tribunal’s verdict, according to Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai. As of now, the Detailed Project Report of Mekedatu project is pending before the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) for approval. It requires the environmental clearance too. The Supreme Court is also hearing the case. BDN RJ
