Ranchi, March 21: The Jharkhand government has taken a significant step towards enhancing medical education in the state. A new medical university is set to be established in Ranchi’s Brambe area, marking the first of its kind in Jharkhand.
The government has officially announced the university as “Jharkhand Health Science University” and appointed Dr. Sudhir Kumar Gupta, currently affiliated with AIIMS, Delhi, as its Vice-Chancellor. According to the notification, he will serve for a maximum of three years, until the age of 70, or until further notice. Once operational, this university will unify all medical, dental, nursing, and paramedical institutions under a single framework.
The university will oversee the curriculum, examinations, and other academic arrangements for these institutions in a coordinated manner. Initially, operations will commence from the Panchayati Raj Training Institute campus in Brambe, which will serve as a temporary setup. This location is advantageous due to its existing infrastructure, allowing for a swift start.
The campus has ample space and facilities that will be utilized for the university’s operations. Previously, the Jharkhand Central University was also based in this complex. Until now, medical and paramedical institutions in the state have been affiliated with various universities, leading to delays in examinations, late results, and a lack of administrative coordination.
The Health Ministry of Jharkhand claims that the establishment of this medical university will enhance the quality of medical education and services in the state. This change is particularly crucial for students, as it will streamline the study and examination processes, making it easier to increase undergraduate and postgraduate seats. This increase in medical seats has been a long-standing necessity in the state.
Health Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari stated that this university will not only promote medical education but also foster research. This initiative aims to produce better doctors and improve the quality of healthcare services in Jharkhand.
He remarked, “We have taken a significant step towards integrating nearly 500 health institutions in the state. Bringing medical colleges, dental colleges, nursing, and paramedical institutions under a single system will enhance both transparency and efficiency in their operations.” Notably, the state government had already announced the establishment of this university in the budget and inspected the Brambe campus in December.
