Jewelry Worth ₹1.5 Crore Missing from Kolkata Bank Locker, Complaint Filed

A Kolkata woman reports the disappearance of jewelry worth ₹1.5 crore from a bank locker, raising security concerns.

Salt Lake, September 25 (Daily Kiran) : In Salt Lake, Kolkata, a significant theft has been reported involving a bank locker containing jewelry valued at approximately ₹1.5 crore. The complaint was lodged by Mamta Singhi at the Bidhannagar East police station. Authorities are currently investigating the incident.

Mamta Singhi stated that the locker was jointly held in her name and that of her daughter-in-law. She last accessed the locker on December 18, where all her jewelry was accounted for. However, when her daughter-in-law visited the bank on August 24 to open the locker, she discovered it completely empty, including both jewelry boxes. Alarmed, she immediately called Mamta to inform her of the situation. Upon arriving at the bank, Mamta found the locker devoid of any items. The bank manager and staff confirmed the locker’s empty state.

Mamta revealed that the jewelry had been collected over many years, with a total value of around ₹1.5 crore. After learning of the theft, family members rushed to the bank, prompting them to notify the police. An FIR was subsequently filed. Mamta expressed frustration with the bank’s response, noting that her family waited nearly five hours without receiving adequate assistance.

The family requested access to the bank’s CCTV footage, but officials stated that it could only be shared with the police. Mamta suspects that access to the locker may have been facilitated through the bank, as she holds the original key and believes a duplicate key might have been used.

Regarding police actions, Mamta mentioned that they are actively working on the case and have been conducting inquiries at the bank. However, she noted that the bank has not provided any meaningful support since the incident. Some officials from the bank’s head office did meet with her to gather details about the theft, but no further actions have been communicated to her.

Mamta raised concerns about the security of bank lockers, stating that many people use them to safeguard their valuables, as they cannot keep them secure at home. Following this incident, she has lost confidence in the bank’s security measures and declared that even if her jewelry is recovered, she will no longer store valuables in a bank locker.
