Tokyo, May 1: Japanese Prime Minister Sane Takaiichi arrived in Hanoi, Vietnam, on Friday, marking the start of her five-day tour of Vietnam and Australia.
Before departing from Tokyo, the Prime Minister’s office announced that Takaiichi would meet with various Vietnamese leaders, including Communist Party General Secretary President To Lam and Prime Minister Le Minh Khai.
According to Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, these meetings will focus on strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership between Japan and Vietnam. Key areas of discussion will include economic security, particularly in energy, critical minerals, and science and technology.
During her visit, Takaiichi will also deliver a speech on Japan’s foreign policy, discussing the development of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” (FOIP). As per the ministry’s schedule, the Japanese Prime Minister will arrive in Australia on Sunday.
On social media platform X, Takaiichi stated, “During my visits to both countries, I will confirm cooperation to strengthen supply chains in Asia, ensure stable energy supplies, and secure critical minerals, considering the current situation in the Middle East.”
In Australia, Takaiichi will hold a Japan-Australia summit with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and meet with Governor-General Samantha Mostyn.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Japan and Australia. The Japanese Foreign Ministry noted that discussions during this tour will enhance cooperation in various fields, including security, economy, economic security, and people-to-people relations, further advancing their unique strategic partnership.
Takaiichi expressed, “I believe these steps will assist Japan in securing essential resources like crude oil and petroleum. Given the current challenging international circumstances, I aim to enhance cooperation that allows each country to strengthen its resilience and self-sufficiency.”
