Jammu and Kashmirs Chief Minister Questions Action Against Rohingyas

Jammu, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has raised concerns regarding the recent administrative actions taken against the Rohingya community. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, he stated that these individuals are being targeted without justification.

Abdullah emphasized that while those who entered from Bangladesh without permission should be addressed differently, the Rohingyas, who were displaced from their homeland, were given refuge in India. “We allowed them to stay here until conditions in their country improved. It seems strange to suddenly take action against them,” he remarked, adding that the matter is under the jurisdiction of the central government.

On Monday, about 250 Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in Jammu and Kashmir were transported via an Indian Air Force flight to West Bengal as part of efforts to repatriate them to Bangladesh.

In addition to discussing the Rohingya situation, Abdullah also addressed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). He asserted that the Jammu and Kashmir government will not implement it. “Such laws should be debated in Parliament and created there,” he stated. “If there is the courage, bring the law to Parliament and see if it passes.”

The UCC proposes to standardize personal laws for all citizens, regardless of religion, replacing the various religion-based regulations currently in place concerning marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance, and succession. Critics of the UCC express concerns over the protection of cultural diversity, minority rights, and religious freedoms.
