Srinagar, May 18: The Crime Branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police filed a chargesheet in court on Monday against a retired senior engineer for fraud and evidence tampering.
The accused, who served as a superintendent engineer at the Jammu and Kashmir State Power Development Corporation, is now retired. According to a statement, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Crime Branch submitted the chargesheet under sections 420, 467, 468, 471, and 201 of the Indian Penal Code to the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Srinagar.
The investigation began after a written complaint alleged manipulation of the accused’s date of birth in his service records. The Crime Branch’s Kashmir station (now the Economic Offences Wing Kashmir) initiated the inquiry based on this complaint.
The investigation revealed that the accused had altered his date of birth from October 28, 1955, to October 28, 1958, to gain undue service benefits. This manipulation was confirmed by a verification report from the Forensic Science Laboratory in Srinagar. The accused also destroyed his original service book to conceal evidence, leading to the application of section 201 of the RPC against him.
The investigation has concluded, and sufficient evidence has been found against the accused. Consequently, the chargesheet has been filed in court for judicial proceedings.
The statement also included a warning to the public, advising them to remain vigilant against financial fraudsters and report any such incidents directly to the SSP EOW Kashmir, Crime Branch Jammu and Kashmir.
