Kolkata, April 24: TMC leader Tanmay Ghosh has taken to social media platform X to respond to Prime Minister Modi’s comments regarding Jadavpur University. He stated that those who contributed nothing to India’s freedom struggle now dare to tarnish the reputation of this prestigious institution.
Ghosh described the remarks as an open attack on the intellectual heritage of Bengal and an attempt to suppress dissenting voices. He questioned whether citizens are now being deprived of their right to speak. “Freedom of speech is a democratic right, not a privilege to be crushed,” he emphasized.
He further asserted that students and alumni of Jadavpur University will unite globally, sign a memorandum, and take their fight to the honorable President.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also targeted the BJP in a post on X. She expressed her dismay, asking if this is the way to describe the talented students of a prestigious university. “Is this your understanding of decency and courtesy?” she questioned. Banerjee noted that Jadavpur University has consistently ranked at the top in the NIRF framework under your government, yet you choose to insult this ‘center of excellence.’ Have you fallen so low?
The Chief Minister highlighted that students have earned their place through merit. They graduate with degrees, intellectual capabilities, and the courage to question. “This is not chaos; this is education, and that is excellence,” she stated.
Banerjee argued that students raising their voices is not disorder. “Disorder is using bulldozers as tools of power instead of justice,” she asserted. She added that true chaos occurs when farmers die and their voices are silenced, or when the guilty of heinous crimes roam free due to political interests.
