Mumbai, August 17: The festival of Nag Panchami is being celebrated across the country today, marking the fifth day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Shravan. On this occasion, actor Jackie Shroff and actress Deepika Chikhaliya shared heartfelt greetings with their fans.

Jackie Shroff posted a picture on his Instagram Stories, where he is seen visiting a Nag temple. He captioned the image, “Wishing everyone heartfelt greetings on the auspicious occasion of Nag Panchami.”

In a similar vein, Deepika Chikhaliya also conveyed her wishes through Instagram. She shared a picture with the message, “Warm wishes to all on Nag Panchami. May the blessings of Nag Devta bring happiness, peace, prosperity, good fortune, and excellent health into your lives. Embrace your traditions and keep your culture alive.”

Actor Suniel Shetty also took to Instagram to wish everyone on Nag Panchami. He shared a video of himself worshipping Nag Devta, stating, “Nag Panchami reminds me of home. I grew up in Mangalore, where Nag Dev has always been a part of our family and traditions. For me, this is not just a festival; it reminds us of our faith, our values, and our roots. On this Nag Panchami, I seek blessings of peace, strength, and protection from Nag Dev.”

Nag Panchami is a significant festival in Hinduism, dedicated to the worship of Nag Devta (serpent). On this day, prayers are offered for family protection and peace. The worship of Lord Shiva during the month of Shravan holds special importance. It is believed that the serpent Vasuki resides around Lord Shiva’s neck, and special prayers are performed on Nag Panchami to please him and seek liberation from serpent-related doshas in one’s horoscope. People typically worship representations of Nag Devta made of clay, silver, or images instead of live snakes.

The festival is primarily linked to the tales from the Mahabharata, particularly the story of King Janamejaya and Sage Astika, as well as the legendary tale of Lord Krishna subduing the Kaliya serpent. In fact, King Parikshit died from a snake bite by the Takshak serpent. To avenge his father’s death, Janamejaya performed a ‘Sarpa Satra Yajna’ to eliminate all snakes. When the snakes began to burn in the fire, Sage Astika intervened to stop the Yajna, thus saving the serpent lineage. This event occurred on the fifth day of the month of Shravan.
