J.J. McCarthy will start as quarterback for the New York Giants against the Houston Texans this Sunday, according to head coach John Harbaugh. McCarthy took over for Jameis Winston during the Giants’ recent 34-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Winston started the last four games, leading the team to a 2-1-1 record after replacing Jaxson Dart, who was injured earlier in the season. Harbaugh emphasized the change aims to improve the team’s offensive performance, stating, “What gives us the best chance to play the best offense we can.”

McCarthy’s performance in relief during the Saints game likely influenced the decision. He threw for 243 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in the fourth quarter, helping narrow a significant deficit. “Life is day-to-day, minute-to-minute,” Harbaugh said about the quarterback position.

Despite his recent struggles, including an interception on his first drive against New Orleans, McCarthy’s potential brings optimism. The Giants traded a 2027 fifth-round draft pick to acquire him from the Minnesota Vikings earlier this season.

Winston acknowledged the need to support McCarthy in his new role. “Every single week, you’re defined by the last time you stepped foot on the field,” he said, committing to a mentorship role.

The Giants hope McCarthy can realize the promise he showed as a first-round pick. This season, Winston has passed for 957 yards, seven touchdowns, and five interceptions, contributing to the Giants’ 3-2-1 record as they prepare for Sunday’s matchup.
