Investigators are probing potential connections between the 16-year-old shooter in Bend, Oregon, and violent online extremist groups after he killed three children and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School on October 15.

Sources indicate that federal and state law enforcement agencies are examining the shooter’s links to nihilistic violent extremist groups, including a decentralized network known as “764.” This group reportedly seeks to create chaos and glorify violence, according to federal assessments.

Law enforcement is trying to understand the shooter’s motives and whether he had any accomplices online. Investigators are also looking into how he obtained the shotgun used in the attack. Search warrants have been executed at the shooter’s home and on his electronic devices and social media accounts, according to Bend Police.

Becky Drury, a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary who was wounded during the shooting, described her experience in a statement. She recalled, “Lying on the floor, I saw that my left hand was almost completely severed from the gunshot.” Drury expressed her heartbreak over the tragedy and the impact it has had on the community.

The shooting left five-year-old Rhoam Summer, along with two other students and a teacher, dead. Rhoam’s family noted he is the youngest victim of a deliberate mass shooting at a U.S. school, which has drawn attention to ongoing issues of gun violence in educational settings.

Reports indicate that law enforcement is taking these investigations seriously, especially given a recent uptick in violent acts linked to nihilistic online communities. Researchers have noted a pattern where young individuals increasingly gravitate toward online platforms that encourage violence.

The Oregon Department of Justice is also investigating Discord, the platform where some extremist groups operate, for failing to protect minors. Attorney General Dan Rayfield emphasized the need for accountability in keeping children safe from online harm, stating, “There must be strong oversight of these companies before more children are hurt.”

Following the tragedy, the Bend-La Pine School District has resumed classes for most schools, while Silver Rail Elementary remains closed indefinitely. The local community continues to seek answers as they cope with the aftermath of this devastating event.
